Tonight I watched Kendra's fourth grade class perform an Opera in which the characters were teeth, facing off against the bad guys, which included sweet treats and plaque-builders. the Plot...an action adventure of candy (disguised as health food) sneaking into the mouth, and after the battle of floss and brushing ensued, these villains gave up and jumped down the esophagus to their deaths. The crowd went wild. The teeth kids were ecstatically triumphant. You have got to be kidding!

I think the reason the kids were so energetic about the Opera was that they had written it themselves, and then it was put to music and choreographed. It was their stories, their ideas set to music, and their thoughts choreographed.  So when it came time to deliver it, they were into it bigtime. If I said, "Would you like to attend an Opera?" you might decline.  But if I said, "Would you like to see a gang of 4th graders act out an epic battle between the armies of dental hygiene and the agents of tooth decay, well, who could turn that down?"

What's your story? Stop acting out somebody else's Opera. That's boring. Write your own.  Act it out even if it's silly, amateurish, or unrefined. Somebody in the audience is going to have a great time watching you excited about your story. Who knows, they might even blog about it.
